PET Recycling.
Wellman is committed to achieving and maintaining the highest standards of Environmental Responsibility and is accredited to the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard.

For 35 years we have played a spear-head role in developing the use of recycled materials for the production of high-grade staple fibres and have been using raw materials made out of post-consumer PET soft drinks and water bottles for more than 20 years.

Carbonated soft drinks bottles and water bottles made from PET are collected and delivered to two dedicated recycling plants, near Arnhem in the Netherlands and at Verdun in France, where they are cleaned and chopped into small pieces, or ‘flakes’. These flakes are transferred in bulk to the Wellman fibre plant in Ireland where they are incorporated with other materials as necessary.

Two thirds of Wellman’s raw materials are made from post-consumer used PET drinks bottles, keeping the equivalent of roughly 2 billion 1.5 litre drinks bottles from landfill or incineration each year.

Carbon emissions associated with making polyester fibre from used PET bottles are only around a fraction of the emissions associated with fibre made from virgin chemicals.

Polyester fibre from Wellman International Limited helps reduce our carbon footprint.
